Naturalism of Dreiser Sister Carrie
Jung Dae-Hwa

Abstract
In theodore Dreiser¡¯s Sister Carrie there is the barbaric Naturalism. The old generation was in love with illusions, and look at truth through a glass darkly and timorously. The present age is fearless and is freeing itself from illusions. Therefore Dreiser want to describe the only reality of life through his work. In his view point, nothing is proved, all is permitted, and the world is without reason or meaning to us. Men are just chemical compound, existing in a world where they play about like water-flies, skipping restlessly and unintelligently as their legs drive them, whom the universe in its vast indifference suffers for a time. In 1900¡¯s all American young men fall in "American dream" such as success, money and pleasure. Main characters in sister carrie always seemed to say : I am dirty, I am commonplace, I am grim, I am shabby, but I am life.
